A modem is termed a gateway to the internet as it converts an inbound Internet connection in a home into an Ethernet connection via a fiber optic cable, telephonic connection, or coaxial cable connected from home that allows devices to access the internet.
In the late 1950s, the first modems were introduced by IBM, which was the main provider. The primary objective of its installation was to establish the connection among multiple military terminals. These were set up across multiple airbases (SAGE air defense system). Few years later, new technologies emerged and mini deals took place. These lead to the integration of all of those into one, Modem.

The modem works as a modulator and a demodulator. The main work of this device is to convert (reduces) all digital data into analog waves. In the process, it converts analog waves back to digital data. In reality, the modem works as a real translator. The ISP provides the internet connection and its speed depending on your subscription. They provide the Internet connection through optical fiber, coaxial cable, or telephone connection and ensure the data transfer is activated to a home modem.
The purpose of the modems is to convert data into a digital signal, which is then transmitted over a Ethernet cable or WiFi to the connected digital devices. These devices should support WiFi or Ethernet for connecting to the Internet.
Some people have confusion about the router and modem. The modem is a device that allows users to access the internet. When it comes to the router, it distributes the Internet signal to the digital devices (whether they are wired or wireless) allowing users to connect to the internet. These devices can be used in homes, and workplaces to ensure communication among them.
Classification of Modems
Modems are classified into three types: DSL modems, cable modems, and fiber modems. One of the important things to consider is a suitable modem to connect to the internet. If you choose a non-suitable one, then you will get the internet speed is lower than the speed assured by the Internet Service Provider (ISP).
These days, modems also work as WiFi routers. This is true, as many users are provided Internet boxes by ISPs. This does not mean that they are the same. In the past, a modem and router were used in parallel.
